University Athletes To Compete for the USA in the World University Games
January 13-23, 2025 in Torino, Italy
TORINO, ITALY – More than 120 American collegiate athletes competing in the 2025 Winter World University Games for the USA are traveling to Italy this week. The team was announced by UniUSA, the U.S. governing body for international university sports. In the United States, ESPN+ will carry highlight shows at 8-11 PM Eastern Time starting Saturday, January 18 through Thursday, January 23.
FISU, the International Federation for University sports, and the Local Organizing Committee in Torino, Italy, the host city for the Games, will welcome more than 3,000 athletes from nearly 50 countries to the Games.
“We wish the USA Team the best of luck,” said Dan Guerrero, President of UniUSA and former UCLA Athletic Director. “Colleges and universities in the United States are competition grounds for athletes from around the world, so we know how competitive these Games will be.”
“Preparations are already underway for the 2029 Summer World University Games which will take place in North Carolina in July of 2029, so we’re cheering on the USA Team and supporting our university athletes from across the United States,” stated Hill Carrow, Chairman and CEO of the North Carolina USA 2029 FISU Summer World University Games.
A list of the athletes and their universities is included below at the end of this release.
For the 2025 winter edition of the event, six municipalities will host 11 sports over the course of 11 days of competition between January 13-23, 2025 in Italy’s Piemonte region.
Alpine skiing, snowboarding, and freestyle will be in Bardonecchia; Pragelato will host cross-country skiing, biathlon, and the sport of ski orienteering; Pinerolo and Torre Pellice will welcome ice hockey; ski mountaineering will be held in Sestriere, while competition in figure skating, short track speed skating, curling, and ice hockey will be held in Torino.
For the first time at the FISU Games, Para student-athletes will compete. In Torino, there will be Para competition in alpine and cross-country skiing. Additionally, the #TO25 BRAINstorm academic challenge will be held, seamlessly intertwining sports with academic competition. Top university students worldwide will compete for medals in 12 mind disciplines, addressing contemporary challenges through innovative projects and proposals.
